About Airlie Beach Lagoon

Airlie Beach Lagoon is a 4,000-square-metre saltwater swimming facility located on the Airlie Beach waterfront. This free, lifeguard-patrolled pool serves as the town's primary swimming venue and social hub, offering safe year-round swimming without the risks of marine stingers or wildlife present in the surrounding Coral Sea.

The lagoon provides safe swimming alternatives to Airlie Beach's ocean waters, which experience seasonal box jellyfish and irukandji presence (Novemberโ€“May) and occasional saltwater crocodile activity. The facility eliminates marine hazards whilst offering stunning views across Pioneer Bay and the Whitsunday Passage. The varied depth profile makes it suitable for all ages and swimming abilities, from infants in the dedicated baby pool to confident swimmers in the deeper zones.

Swimming Areas & Depths

Water Depths: Up to 2 metres maximum depth. Approximately 70% of the lagoon sits at around 1 metre deep, with extensive shallow zones throughout the perimeter perfect for children and nervous swimmers.

๐ŸŠ Main Swimming Zones

Multiple swimming areas with depths ranging from shallow paddling zones to 2 metres. Central areas feature 1-2 metre depths ideal for confident swimmers.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Infant Pool

Dedicated infant pool located at the north end near the playground with shallow areas specifically designed for toddlers and babies.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Shallow Zones

Extensive shallow areas around the lagoon perimeter with sandy, beach-style edges. Perfect for young children and non-confident swimmers.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Manmade Beach
