About Portside Whitsunday Luxury Holiday Apartments
Right on Shute Harbour Road, literally across from the Port of Airlie, Portside Whitsunday hits that sweet spot of being in the thick of everything while still feeling like a proper resort. You can walk to the main street in two minutes, grab breakfast at one of the cafes, and still come back to your private balcony with sweeping views across Pioneer Bay to the Whitsunday Islands.
What sets this place apart is the location - and here's the thing about location in Airlie Beach. Most accommodation is either right in town with loads of noise, or up on the steep hillsides with killer views but a serious hike home. Portside manages to give you both waterfront position and level access. No hills to climb, just a flat 100-metre stroll into the heart of Airlie. That's gold when you're carrying beach gear or coming home after a long day out on the reef.
The 19 apartments are spacious and genuinely luxurious, with full kitchens that actually work well (proper appliances, not token stuff), air-con in every room, and balconies big enough to properly enjoy. Colleen and John, who manage the place, have that rare combination of being super helpful without being intrusive - they'll book your tours, arrange taxis, and give you the local insider tips.
What Guests Are Saying
"Super location close to everything. Very walkable to restaurants and shopping. Beautiful views. Large and spacious apartment. Easy pickup for Whitsunday sailing and other activities."
Booking.com
"At first sight, the location of Portside Whitsunday Apartments seems just OK. However, it didn't take long for us to realise that it was actually an excellent spot, with the local shuttle buses stopping right outside the door and the main shopping and restaurant area starting just 100 metres away. Being at one end of the town, the apartments were also close to the start of the coastal walk to Cannonvale Bay. Another bonus of the location was that it did not require a hill climb to reach, unlike much of Airlie Beach accommodation on the steep slopes above the town."
TripAdvisor
"We loved the spacious four bedroom penthouse with its own pool and incredible views. John and Colleen are the best hosts you will find, so kind and accommodating. Will stay here every time I visit the Whitsundays without question."

Heads up: Being right on Shute Harbour Road (the only road through Airlie), you'll hear some traffic noise during the day and early evening. It quiets down after 9pm, and most people say it doesn't bother them, but light sleepers might want to close the balcony doors at night. The trade-off is you're literally steps from everything with no hills to climb.

The Location
Location is everything in Airlie Beach, and Portside Whitsunday absolutely nails it. You're right on the main drag at 406 Shute Harbour Road, which is the only road through town. This means everything - and we mean everything - is within a few minutes' walk. The big bonus? Unlike most waterfront accommodation in Airlie, you're on level ground. No steep hills to climb home after a day out, no huffing and puffing with beach gear or groceries.
What's Nearby
Port of Airlie: Literally across the road from Portside. This new marina precinct is where most ferry services depart from, plus there are cafes, restaurants, and the waterfront boardwalk. You can be standing on the ferry pontoon in under a minute.
Main Street & Restaurants: A flat 100-metre stroll gets you to the heart of Airlie's main street. All the restaurants, cafes, and bars are right there - perfect for wandering out to dinner without needing a taxi or car.
Airlie Beach Lagoon: Just 150 metres away. This free saltwater swimming lagoon is patrolled by lifesavers and surrounded by grassy parks with BBQ facilities. The Saturday morning markets set up on the foreshore right next to the lagoon.
Whitsunday Sailing Club: About 150 metres in the other direction. Great spot for a cold beer, affordable meals, and genuine local atmosphere. Members and visitors welcome.
Coral Sea Marina: A pleasant 12-15 minute walk along the Bicentennial Walkway. This is where about 80% of Whitsunday day trips depart from - sailing trips, reef tours, island visits. The marina village has cafes, restaurants, and beautiful boardwalks.
Boathaven Beach: 600 metres away. A quieter beach that locals use, with good swimming at high tide and a picnic area. It's also the starting point for the scenic coastal walk.
Woolworths Cannonvale: About 5 minutes by car in the air-conditioned Centro Shopping Centre. There's also an IGA supermarket 1.5km south of the main street.
What You'll See from Your Balcony
- Pioneer Bay with constant boat traffic - yachts, ferries, and superyachts coming and going
- The Whitsunday Islands dotting the horizon, changing colour throughout the day
- Sunrise over the Coral Sea - wake up to golden light hitting the islands
- The Port of Airlie marina right below, all lit up at night
- Cooling sea breezes year-round - natural air-conditioning for the balcony

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Portside Whitsunday suitable for families with children?
Absolutely! The 2, 3, and 4-bedroom apartments provide plenty of space, and the heated pool is great for kids. The level walk to town and no hills to climb makes it much easier with young children and prams compared to hillside properties.
How noisy is it being on the main road?
There's traffic noise during the day and early evening since it's the only road through town, but it quiets down significantly after 9pm. Most guests say the incredible location and views are worth it, but light sleepers might prefer to close balcony doors at night.
Do I need a car to stay at Portside Whitsunday?
Not necessarily. You can walk to all restaurants, the lagoon, and the Port of Airlie ferry terminal. Shuttle buses and taxis are readily available for tours and trips further afield.
How far is it to Whitehaven Beach?
Whitehaven Beach is on Whitsunday Island and accessible only by boat. The tour desk at Portside can arrange day trips, which typically depart from either Port of Airlie (across the road) or Coral Sea Marina (15-minute walk).
Are the penthouse apartments worth the extra cost?
If you're travelling as a group or celebrating something special, the penthouse with its private rooftop pool, spa, and BBQ is genuinely spectacular. It's a unique experience you won't find at many other properties in Airlie Beach.
