Originally named "Drumbeat," she was built in Fremantle in 1989 by the famous Alan Bond and won the gruelling 1989-1990 Sydney to Hobart race despite horrific weather conditions. After a stint racing in the United States as "Congere" and serving as a training vessel for American Naval sailors, OzSail brought her back to Australia in 2004. She's kept her cheeky name and now offers backpackers the chance to sail on a piece of Australian maritime history.
The Spank Me Whitsundays tour is perfect for social travellers aged 18-35 who want a proper sailing experience on a fast yacht. Good to know: Sleeping quarters are open-plan dorm-style bunks - comfortable for a boat but basic. Summer months (November to March) can be extremely hot and humid below deck with no air conditioning. You might share a bed space with someone you don't know. There's one bathroom shared between 27 guests, and there's no proper shower - just a cold water rinse on deck.

A Spank Me Whitsundays sailing tour is proper adventure sailing on a yacht with real racing history. This isn't a slow cruise - it's a fast, exhilarating experience on one of the largest maxis in the Airlie Beach fleet. The crew will teach you how to help hoist the mainsail and headsail, and if conditions are right you might even get to take the helm. Over 2 days and 2 nights, you'll explore the best of the Whitsunday Islands, snorkel pristine fringing reefs, and experience Whitehaven Beach before the crowds arrive.
Your Itinerary
Day 1 - Departure: Check in at Coral Sea Marina Meeting Point C. Departure time varies with tides - you'll receive confirmation via text 72 hours before. Once aboard, the crew gives you a safety briefing and you'll get fitted with your stinger suit. Set sail through the Whitsunday Passage with music playing and wind in your hair. First snorkelling stop at one of the fringing reefs - possibly Blue Pearl Bay, Luncheon Bay, or Caves Cove. Evening is spent anchored in a protected bay, dinner onboard (beef stew, tacos, or bolognese with fresh salads), and time to chill with your new mates under the stars. The underwater lights attract nocturnal marine life for some night viewing.
Day 2 - Full Day: Early wake-up call to sail to Whitehaven Beach and arrive before anyone else. Land at Tongue Point for a guided bush walk to Hill Inlet Lookout - the view of the swirling sands is absolutely insane. Spend around 2 hours on the pure white silica beach, then back to the boat for lunch and more snorkelling at different locations around Hook Island or Border Island. If weather permits, the second night might include camping on a secluded island beach with all gear provided - bonfire, stargazing, the works. Otherwise, another night anchored in paradise aboard the yacht.
Day 3 - Return: Final morning swim or snorkel before breakfast and sailing back to Coral Sea Marina. Arrive between 8:00 and 9:00 AM. Don't leave Airlie Beach straight away - OzSail books you a VIP table at Beaches Backpackers for dinner at 6:30 PM with free entry and VIP treatment at Paddy's Shenanigans afterwards. Great way to celebrate with your new mates!
